Wet Felted Flower Lariat — Saturday Afternoon

Students will learn the fundamentals in fiber selection, design layout, and technique for three dimensional shaping and joint connections while making their own wet felted flower lariat using both commercially dyed as well as hand-dyed fibers prepared by the instructor.

All levels welcome. Be advised there may be long periods of standing, and felting requires some physical exertion. Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended.

Materials and usage of workshop supplies are included in the fee. Students are asked to bring one or two old towels and pen/paper.

Meet Your Instructor: Kami Watson (b. 1972, she/her) is a second-generation fiber and textile artist based in Huntsville, Alabama. Specializing in wet felting, a centuries-old process that is both labor and time intensive, her work combines renewable fibers, hand dyed and reclaimed textiles, and other organic and non-organic materials to create sculptural and flat works that blend personal narrative, connection to craft, sustainability, and storytelling.

Watson is an Alabama State Council on the Arts Individual Craft Fellowship recipient and her work has shown in multiple solo and selected group exhibitions. She has been accepted into numerous regional and national fine craft guilds, has participated in juried art and fine craft shows throughout the South and the East Coast, and her pieces have been in retail galleries nationally.

A Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, former AmeriCorps VISTA, and three-time deployed American Red Cross - Service to the Armed Forces mobile staffer (OEF/OIF), Watson brings a deep commitment to outreach into her creative practice. She has received grant funding from The Verdant Fund and the Huntsville-Madison County Library Foundation to lead free community workshops at her local library, expanding access to traditional and contemporary fiber arts while encouraging creativity and community connection. As an experienced non-traditional teaching artist, she has led workshops at the John C. Campbell Folk School, Huntsville Museum of Art, Kennedy-Douglas Center for the Arts, Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, and the North Huntsville Public Library.
